As a unionist, we know that when workers stand together, we can win better jobs, safer workplaces and stronger communities.
But did you know that Australian unions also support workers beyond our borders through Union Aid Abroad–APHEDA, the global justice organisation of the Australian trade union movement?
This End of Financial Year, we’re asking you to stand in solidarity with workers across Southeast Asia and the Pacific who are on the frontlines of the climate crisis.
While powerful fossil fuel interests, their lobbyists, and politicians with neo-liberal agendas continue to delay action, workers are already fighting for a future that protects both jobs and the planet.
In South Sumatra, Indonesia, coal mine workers were hit with mass sackings after their union began organising around a just transition. Thirty-eight workers lost their jobs. Many were trapped in insecure contracts with little hope of returning to work.
But their union fought back. Through collective action, 27 workers won their jobs back with fair contracts and minimum wages, while others secured opportunities to retrain and move into new industries as coal is phased out. Their victory showed that workers must have a voice in shaping a just transition and that when unions organise, workers can win.
This is what international solidarity looks like.
With your help, Union Aid Abroad–APHEDA can continue supporting unions and labour organisations build worker power, defend rights and fight for climate justice across our region.
This EOFY, please make a donation and stand with workers leading the fight for a climate justice.
