Apprenticeships can be tough, but they’re worth it to get the trade that will carry you through your working life.
And whatever trade you’re in there are things you’re entitled to. You should be getting:
TAFE and training fees paid, including the cost of textbooks
Uniforms provided or their cost reimbursed
Supervision that lets you work safely and learn properly on the job
Superannuation
Pay rates and entitlements that are in line with or above the current award for your trade, or your EBA if you are covered by one
A 30-60 minute lunch break, a 10 minute break between starting work and lunch and a 20-minute paid break for every 4 hours of overtime worked
A valid training contract within your first three months of work
When you join a union you’re part of a group of people across your entire trade and industry who look out for each other. Your union will make sure your boss is giving you everything you’re entitled to under the law.
Your union will also provide support for members to negotiate a better deal at work through an agreement between you and your workmates, and your boss.
Around Australia, union members get:
In recent years, unions have secured millions in pay rises for apprentices and pursued millions more in back pay. We’ve raised the standard of training and supervision, and stopped dodgy bosses ripping people off and mistreating them at work.
Union members get legal representation, negotiating support for pay rises, backing and advice on safety issues, better bargaining power with bosses and a range of other benefits.
Officials from the AMWU and CEPU – two of the main unions in the blue-collar trades – will be travelling around South Australia this year holding a series of town hall meetings to help people understand and join unions.
We’d love to see you there.
