A Short History
The CEPU is short for the Communications, Electrical, Electronic, Energy, Information, Postal, Plumbing and Allied Services Union of Australia. In our current incarnation, we were formed by an amalgamation of the Electrical Trades Union (ETU) and the Plumbers and Gasfitters Union (PGEU) in 1992 and then the Communications Workers Union (CWU) in 1994.
The union comprises three Divisions - electrical, communications and plumbing (representing each of the amalgamated unions). The information on this website is about the Electrical Division.
The history of the ETU (Electrical Trades Union) which was the precursor to the Electrical Division dates back to 1901. It's history reflects the nature of its conception. We grew from being individual State branches to form a loose federation without any real national identity for many decades. Funding was never centralised and shifting allegiances and powerplays owe much to our origins as a federation.
