The Electrical Trades Union has continued its run of strong national leadership, with the incumbent team of national secretary Allen Hicks and assistant national secretary David Mier being returned unopposed at the recent quadrennial elections.
The returning secretary said the result was both fulfilling and humbling.
“I am immensely grateful to the hard-working members of our union for this opportunity to continue to lead the ETU at a national level,” he said.
“It’s humbling to be able to serve the men and women of our union for another four years.”
The result will equip the union to face and overcome the challenges of the future, he said.
“Working people across Australia are facing unprecedented attacks and pressure on their living standards and working conditions.”
“Now, more than ever, we need to speak with a single voice and clearly tell those who seek to undermine the living standards of working Australians that we will fight back.
“With the attacks on penalty rates, the unfair China Free Trade Agreement, a government threatening to re-introduce the draconian ABCC and attempts to sell off the nation’s electricity networks to private interests, there has never been more to fight for as a union.”
Mr Hicks praised his assistant secretary, David Mier, saying he had the organisational skill and strategic vision to provide valuable direction to the union.
“David has been a tireless and insightful assistant secretary and is a man of great integrity.” he said.
Mr Hicks was appointed national secretary of the ETU in July 2013, after a period as assistant national secretary.
Prior to this he was an assistant secretary in the Queensland branch of the union.
